So my local library does a ‘blind date with a book’ thing - book wrapped in a paper with a description, you can’t open it until you’ve borrowed it. I got one described as body horror and its oddbody by Rose Keating and tucked inside was this note.

Gave up on the bad disaster series because I suddenly cried out ‘why am I watching this when the entirety of ER is on Netflix?’ and have gone back to it. Funny thing is, watching it now, I really don’t care about Doug Ross at all

I’m watching a not very good disaster serial (no I don’t know why I’m still watching it) and the uncrackable computer code even the star hacker can’t crack is clearly Wingdings

Went to vote, gave my name as Michelle Birkby and the poll clerk said ‘the author?’ Now as my books were published about five years ago and I thought had disappeared entirely this made me very happy and slightly stunned. I’m still the author.

Went to see Hokum, not knowing anything about it. Mix of folk horror and ghost story - Adam Scott as a deeply unpleasant writer caught up in a mystery in an Irish hotel. Genuinely terrifying moments, very scary and really good characters

I’m not sure what studios think they’re doing when they advertise a film in the trailer as different from the what the film actually is. Leads viewers to be disappointed and people who might have watched the film as it is to miss it

Roofman trailers made it look like a wacky comedy but it’s far more thoughtful and insightful and quiet than that. Fantastic performance by Channing Tatum who is really turning into one of the best screen actors

Alright, watching Roofman purely for Channing Tatum, who has surprised me in the last two movies I saw him in, he was very good

I’m quite peeved at the way certain horror movies hang around in the cinema for weeks and yet others are one week and gone (and I think the ones that are gone do tend to be the woman-led ones)

Watched Dead of Winter, which I somehow managed to miss entirely in the cinema last year. Decent ‘terrible things happen in the wilderness’ movie, unusual that both hero and villain are older women (Emma Thompson and Judy Greer) and the protagonist is very capable

Every time I watch a movie set in the countryside I am so relieved I live in a city… I mean, admittedly, nearly every movie I watch set in the country is a horror…

Currently watching a Korean horror series - If Wishes Could Kill, about an app that grants wishes and then counts down to their death. It’s very bloody - ALL the trigger warnings - but very good. I am enjoying this new trend of movie style horrors being created as a series

Catching up on recent @weirdinthewade.bsky.social episode and delighted to find a road ghost episode - I’m fascinated by road ghosts - constantly searching and wandering, only ever a brief interaction. One day I’m going to have a good explore of bluebell hill and the road ghosts there

Watched Akira in the cinema and wow - still just as good as I remember it, still incredibly iconic

Revisiting the first ever anime I ever saw - (unless battle of the planets and that Godzilla cartoon series count?) by seeing Akira in the cinema

As far as anyone’s concerned, I did a 5k walk today for grown up health reasons but just between us it was a tour of all the Pokémon Go gyms in the area.:..

Watched Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen which was very enjoyable. Slow start but got good - episode 5 especially creepy. Great ending. But as usual with these marriage as horror stories (like Ready or Not) I have to wonder why she ever fell for him at all

Inspired by @tartanmog.bsky.social been diving into sci-fi. Saw Project Hail Mary twice - that’s a fantastic move, loved it. Reading Three Body Problem - not an easy read but intriguing. Listening to audio dramatisation of Murderbot diaries - I love it. And now watching Interstellar - very intrigued

I’m reading Andrew Miller The Land in Winter and it’s set in the sixties and there’s a woman in it who loves reading pulp sci-fi and when the doctor says she might prefer Virgina Woolf she has such scorn for him. I love her. I love Virginia Woolf but also yay for a woman who loves pulp sci-fi!

No spoilers so I can’t say what the line is but there is a line on page 287 of Itch that I absolutely love and adore

I am reading Itch by Gemma Amor, a feminist folk horror and I am loving it. Very intriguing and - well - it makes my skin crawl.

Reading a ghost story that is ‘I heard a cat purring on my bed but we didn’t have a cat and no way for one to get in’. Neither of those is a barrier to finding a cat on your bed. (The black cat continues to visit me at night and now an orange cat comes in sometimes too)
