everyone made a big commotion about skills, a bunch of secondary tooling got built, standards got established and the majority of users have never installed a skill i wish everyone would chill out, most ideas are bad, restraint is more important than ever

Who has the book, video, article, and/or guide for iteratively and pragmatically adapting agentic workflows in enterprise software while maintaining rigid engineering practices? Everything I can find is too vibe-y, lacks proper guardrails, and/or too focused on solo side projects.

There’s a new cohort of people being introduced to building software through ai tools. Unfortunately, the current crop of long time engineers turned AI influencers are doing them a disservice by letting it be known that details don’t matter. Sweating the details will help separate quality from slop.

Well my training wasn’t what I wanted it to be (inconsistent at best) and I was up at 4am before the race (both 3 month old baby related), but I finished and faster than I would’ve guessed based on those conditions - so I’ll take it! Now to find some consistency for a bigger fall race!

that's part of it. but there are also core aspects of the web (esp html & css) that were already too invisible: cross-browser/device support & a11y. It's not enough to care about "outcomes" when you think everyone has the same experience as you. Many care about craft **because of the outcomes**

The “move fast, break things” ethos that consumed tech did more harm than good. Too many companies used it as an excuse to drive quantity over quality resulting in so much mid software. Then again it was more about extracting value from users than providing value to them.

When it comes to AI agents / AI tooling + coding, I hear an awful lot of talk about: Efficiency Iteration speed / PR output rate / lines of codes produced I hear zero mentions about: Quality Customer obsession This will bite back, and it probably already is...

I don't like the framing of skeptic vs enthusiast. More and more people understand that it's capable (the degree to which varies), but the framing diminishes the very real concerns around all the other harmful consequences of the technology.

i really don't care about using AI to ship more stuff it's really hard to come up with stuff worth shipping i want to ship the same amount of stuff with higher quality both in product and code

Just realized I haven’t listened to an audiobook or podcast all year. I haven’t missed anything and it’s been so refreshing. I’ve discovered a ton of new music I’ve enjoyed and gotten more out of reading books.

This winter was rough, but today it’s nearly 70 degrees. Perfect excuse to fire up the grill for the first time this year!

My mom, a nontechnical person finally learning a little about AI, just asked me if my job was safe. Was interesting trying to explain how my skill set is not obsolete, what AI is good and not good at, the weirdness of the job market, and how it all interconnects.

This is where my opinion has landed as well. Most of the “typing” is done by LLMs for my own code these days, but I’m still in my IDE, reading, watching the diffs go by, interrupting to tell it to do something differently, refactoring regularly to make sure the code is legible.

The code may be the easy part, but it hasn’t lost its importance.

having used claude extensively for the past couple of months, i think there is still a lot of value to understanding your code and steering it intentionally. the amount of incidental complexity claude accumulates otherwise (which mostly results in bugs that it can't ever fix reliably) is staggering.

This is mostly true because software engineers (myself included) suck at promoting the value they actually deliver. The bad choices you didn’t make are part of your value prop.

I don’t watch a ton of TV but just realized the three shows I’m currently watching are a Bill Lawrence show, a hospital show, and a Bill Lawrence hospital show.

I care less and less about who is producing code and how they are producing it, but the longer I’ve been a developer, the more I care about that code (at certain levels of fidelity), because it has a direct impact on performance, cost, and user experience.

Currently *teaching myself c++ because I have an interest in forking and playing around with some Linux apps to tinker an ideal desktop environment for myself. *I learned c++ but this was before c++11 so it’s been a while

That said, tile managers rock! Can understand why they're not the default for everybody, but they really track with how I like to move around a computer and create dedicated workspaces.

Software engineering is a “Do as I say, not as I do” industry. Well, if you want to adopt and scale AI at your org, you need to start doing what you say. Small, iterative PRs, multi layer testing, o11y, ability to quickly spin up new environments, etc. These are all bare minimum needed to succeed.

After using nvim and tmux as my daily coding driver for the last few years and loving it, I wanted that feel for all my apps and have started using a tile manager on my Mac (aerospace). Unfortunately this has just taught me how much I dislike some of the Mac baked-in shortcuts.

Props to @scott.hanselman.com for naming the elephant in the room in big tech. AI coding tools boost senior engineers but create challenges for juniors who lack context to judge outputs. Cutting junior hiring for near-term gains weakens the future pipeline. We’ll need apprenticeship-style paths.

And not just in regard to things, but people. It's important to keep caring. It's important to keep caring about how people work (not just labor), and how we're built (cognitively, emotionally). There is a remarkable lack of care in this age; carelessness at scale. This will not hold. It can't.

Oddly enough, though I love building software, Im at the point that I want less software in my life. Or at the very least I want it to be less in-my-face obvious that Im dealing with software of any kind. Part of this actually means less software but part of this also means software that just works.

Getting back into running after the second child and the brutal cold has been tough. But today I took off my watch and stopped trying to chase speed and distance and went completely by feel. Best run I’ve had in a long time!
