Today I gave one of my favourite but most difficult lectures of the year; ‘records of life and death’… which leads into memory and the archive. Every time I am in the office, I walk past this. It is a remembrance of members of the University community who have died recently.

Intrigued by the People’s Bookshelf at the National Library of Latvia. Each book in the collection has been donated by a member of the public and is inscribed by its former owner, telling a personal story relating to the book.

I've been having some amazing conversations about this lately. As an archivist I have to process a lot of material that I would rather not see or that is immensely emotional, and then I apply content warnings and closures as appropriate so that researchers aren't 'surprised'. It can be gruelling.

A quick trip to Aberdeen with the boy* to help with the driving and get him settled before he starts his next placement tomorrow in Foresterhill. Nearly back home in time for hospital visiting. *boy is pushing it a little; he’s 19 in a few days!

Finished this book today. It was heartbreaking and wonderful and made me think. The debate in the UK at the moment on #AssistedDying is so important. But much more important is that we all understand end of life care and how to do it right. @doctoroxford.bsky.social

This is a profound mistake. Despite leading so much #digitalpreservation good practice and capability, the UK is about 20 years away from having the qualified leadership and competence in depth to approach a project like this. I know about these things. This is a mistake.
