This is an excellent column. We faced a similar set of calculations with a senior Chihuahua we adopted. Thought we'd get 5 years and only had 18 months. We went with comfort care until it was clear that bad days eclipsed good, and then had a hard but loving goodbye with a great vet.

And I'd add a breach of the like, "social contract" of teacher-student, in which what I owe them is my discernment (not boilerplate) and what they owe me is their actual effort (not machine words). If I didn't care enough to write it, why should they care enough to read it (and vice versa).
