The Online Safety Act has made going online even more dangerous. Google is now warning that as Britons turn to VPNs to avoid the act, there's been an explosion in scam VPNs that sell data or provide it to state actors. Naturally, that would includes data on (and access to) minors.

It’s legal for me to do my job, and legal for you to enjoy the work I create. But the government is proposing banning the only tool that makes it possible for me to accomplish it.

Now, it's hard to campaign on "The US government should seize millions of foreign domains and build a Great Firewall." But passing bills that are doomed to fail gives you years to rile up a societal panic. When the laws don't work, you blame porn again. At which point, maybe people are ready.

I'll give you a US example:. The main age-verification lobbyist — a man who largely believes porn should be outlawed — admitted the state-level bills he pushed for won't work and were really a predicate for federal action. He wants the DOJ to seize domains.

This is several days old. But amidst so much else id missed it. That’s a stunning number. No wonder they about-faced. Reminder of the power of consumers in oligarch era, not subject to the same kind of targeting.

The UK government isn't unaware of what's going on. There's plenty of data before and after that's shown this would happen. Ofcom itself has made efforts to listen and to find solutions. But ultimately, this was always going to happen. Sex workers were seen as an acceptable sacrifice.

Law enforcement does this regularly, with high-profile round-ups of sex workers under the guise of stopping trafficking. They're rewarded with grant money and federal funds and PR. Meanwhile, the sex workers are jailed or forced through rehabilitation programs or assaulted. That's exploitation.

For all the talk about exploitation and sex work, the biggest exploiters are often governments. Here, they're effectively removing money out of creators pockets so that they claim political victory. While they may not be keeping the money directly, that's still profiting off of someone else's labor.

For adult creators, it's even more disastrous. The more people are dissuaded from going to legal sites, the more they seek out pirated content, which doesn't require facial scans to access. The UK government is starving creators to score a political point.

And it's not just Pornhub. Traffic to adult sites has fallen dramatically, even according to the figures supplied by Ofcom, the UK enforcement agency. The British government is actively dissuading adults from accessing adult content, using the threat of surveillance. That's called censorship.

Traffic to Pornhub has fallen by more than 75% in the UK since the introduction of the Online Safety Act, as legal adults have shifted to the thousands non-compliant sites, supercharging the growth of platforms that don't moderate for pirated content, revenge porn and CSAM An unmitigated disaster.

“The market for children’s information on the dark web is, unfortunately, booming. The demand is there and digital ID will create one of the largest supplies of children’s data just waiting to be hacked.”

Crucially, violence against sex workers, either by clients or by members of the Gardaí, remains widespread and sex workers themselves have explained how the current legislation has been disempowering for them, making them therefore more vulnerable to this violence.

Launching the bill yesterday at the Red Umbrella Film Festival, Ruth Coppinger said “Reducing demand was a key aim of the 2017 Sexual Offences Act — this incontrovertibly has not worked, as the Minister for Justice himself admitted after the review of the legislation was published.

These organisations are made up of sex workers and activists who are drawing on lived experience and mountains of evidence to bring forward a piece of legislation to fully decriminalise sex work and introduce regulations that centre the safety of sex workers.
