One thing I always tried to tell people over the years is to try as hard as you can to enjoy something regardless of the fandom, not the other way around. It's much healthier to engage with the media with your own solitary opinions than to engage with them based on an amalgam of arbitrary ones.

Remember when the Phantom Menace came out and Star Wars fans harassed the actors because the movie sucked and instead of criticizing the writing or direction they just blamed the actors who played Anakin and Jarjar one of whom was a literal child? And that was back in 1999.

I'll remember hearing the Avatar The Last Airbender fandom at it's height of popularity was "toxic". I mean toxic people will exist ANYWHERE. But it'll cool eventually.
