I always thought muttonchops was a weird name for weird looking facial hair but now I totally get it. Barron rocks the muttonchop look but most folks just don't have what it takes to pull it off lol

After much trauma-me running around the pasture for an hour trying to catch her until husband came home from work-I was able to pull this nice ram lamb. I really had little hope it would be alive, and when I unstuck him⦠so much relief!

Our pure bred brown dog (both parents may or may not have been brown), Sammy, has become really protective of the lamb keeping the evil cats away.

News continues to be terrible so here are our latest lambs. A black fleeced ram and a multi colored ewe. This was taken minutes after their birth. We are proud to raise Gulf Coast Natives, a critically endangered sheep breed.

More lambs! Another two sets of twins including a pitch black ram lamb. Also featuring an appearance by dad, who doesnāt seem that impressed that he now has 13 offspring at the ripe old age of 9 months!

We are in the midst of lambing here in central Texas. 2 singles, twins and a set of triplets so far. The weakest triplet started fading so we brought it in as a bottle baby. Still weak but seems better.

Our smallest triplet is really struggling so weāve brought her into the house to keep her warm and to make sure she is getting enough to eat. Sammy has appointed himself her guardian, with particular concern for the errant cats who get too close.

Iām at work, but this morning was ⦠whew. A lamb was stuck so I had to pull it. Thankfully it is alive, but it was really touch and go given the umbilical cord broke before it was out. Iām going to be shaking all day⦠but itās up and nursing (and huge).

Tillie has such beautiful eyes. Sheep get a bad rap as timid, non-thinking conformists, but they all have their own personalities and will definitely let you know what they want!

(From Instagram LiveStock Conservancy today), Gulf Coast sheep fit their challenging environment so well that for centuries, they were the only sheep to be found in the deep South, providing wool and meat for home production.... (see alt text for complete info)

Free Sheepherding Demonstration Sunday at TattersallĀ Farm
Tattersall Farm is offering a free sheepherding demonstration as a part of the Essex Heritage Area Trails and Sails this Sunday. Using rare heritage breed Gulf Coast Native sheep, sheepherder Tim Molinara will demonstrate how the dogs help us manage his flock.Ā He also talks about the history of sheep, the border collie and the importance of preserving landrace breeds. He will be on hand to discuss training and take questions.

Big news at the Rockinā h ranch. We bought a new flock ram, Dali (yes as in Salvador). Heās a Gulf Coast native in the Ladnor line. Our breed is critically endangered and every lamb helps save this breed. Heās only 6 months old, so no lambs right away, but he is already eyeballing the ewes!

The sheep always follow the same path to the field, even if they have grazed the whole path clean. They also will make some passing lanes, where slower sheep can be passed. Instinct, I guess makes them do this, and we find it interesting.
