The unusual macropterous form (f. burri) of the usually flightless Short-winged Conehead. Males are v. difficult to tell from Long-winged C-H but females like this are easier as they have shorter, curving ovipositors. A 1st for me, seen yesterday at Prenton Dell Claypit. @tanyptera.bsky.social

Malaria or Ague as it was known was once common(ish) in the British Isles. Although we still have the vectors we don’t have the plasmodium. Draining wetlands, Little Ice Age, improved housing, reduced exposure - all may have helped then… @tanyptera.bsky.social #ThomDallimore
