It is quite simply dishonest to describe TPUSA as a “free speech” organization and not even mention the “Professor Watchlist,” as NPR just did. Reporting on a crime does not entail adopting the victim’s views.

The idea that an instructor can and *should* be fired for daring to teach something not explicitly mentioned in course catalog is the pinnacle of the "students as customers" idiocy that's been steadily destroying American universities for decades now. You're taking a class, not buying a product.

You can stand against political violence - I do. You can call for a kinder politics - I do. You can condemn killing over speech - I do. But calling for people to continue Kirk's work is too far. This was not Charlie Kirk's legacy.

Political violence is abhorrent. I have not celebrated Kirk's death. But Newsom calling for his followers to "continue Charlie Kirk's work," someone who praised stoning gay people as "god's perfect law," who called for men to "take care of" trans people like they did in the 50s and 60s, is not it.

There’s a way to be respectful in reporting on Charlie Kirk being shot while also refusing to whitewash who he was and what consequences his political activism has had. Obituaries for public figures are a part of history.

My professional opinion as a historian of horrible people doing horrible things is that deep and gnawing fear is a reasonable response right now

It is possible to hold both of these things true at the same time: 1) political violence is never an appropriate choice in a civilized society 2) Charlie Kirk’s dream is to create exactly the kind of society he currently lives in, as spoken from his own mouth
