A new podcast I’m doing with my students here. It’s called Object Lessons and we talk to people about treasured objects that represent their relationship to sports. This season will feature a bowling ball, a Carmelo Anthony ‘Got Milk’ poster stolen from an elementary school and a paycheck from 1968.

Great piece by @redford.bsky.social and another crushingly depressing example of the asymmetry in the level of difficulty in the larger ideological battle. Abiding and thoughtful management of something like a forest? Exceedingly difficult. Laying waste to it? Exceptionally easy.

A thing that is interesting to me is how technology fundamentally shifts the intent of a rule in sports. I think offsides in soccer is the best example, but all this balls and strikes tech in baseball too.

I explained to the Rank & Tenure Committee this morning that this is part of my scholarly work on how redlining has proved exclusionary towards grouches, and they have confirmed that this count's as research. Honestly though, a thrill to be a part of it. I wasn't very good, but it was fun.

When I went to UConn in the 90's there was a touchscreen kiosk in the library where you could watch the Tate George shot to beat Clemson in the 1990 NCAA tournament as many times as you wanted. I had no friends when I arrived. My only friend was that kiosk. Meet my new best friend.
