NEW RESEARCH Manopolies: How the education system embeds sexism in GCSE English Literature. Only 5% of students studied a female authored text at GCSE in 2024. And there is no incentive to pick female authored texts. We uncovered that no education body is monitoring diversity in the curriculum.

It was inspiring to hear so many people sharing insights into how boys can be encouraged to prevent violence against woman and girls at the launch of this important new report by @evawuk We especially welcome the recommendation that 'whole of institution' approaches are needed.

The last week of term has ended and amongst it all the amazing @endsexisminschools.bsky.social History team have put in 9 hours of Teams meetings and goodness knows how many hours writing between us. Feeling incredibly of what we’ve achieved in the last 3 years and excited to see it come together!

While we welcome the new RHSE guidelines announced by the government, this is only part of the solution to ending the endemic of misogyny in schools.

Ofsted have scrapped single word judgements of schools after inspections. However we took a look at schools and the word ‘sexist’ seems to cover it.

Women are invisible in the curriculum. Boys are not learning about women’s achievements, opinions and experiences. They are not taught to develop empathy and see women as people. Hey Labour - start with a root cause of violence of violence against women and girls. End sexism in schools.

Break the invisibility spell cast over women and girls 🪄

Jess seems to get it. But we’re still concerned about Education Minister Bridget Phillipson. She thinks tweaks to RSHE lessons will fix this but sexism and inequality are baked into the very foundations of our education system.

Only a third of schools in Scotland have signed up to a gender-based violence prevention scheme. Why on earth was tackling sexual harassment and violence in schools optional? Dismantle the dangerous patriarchal systems and misogyny embedded throughout the education system right now.

Who studied Of Mice And Men? The only female character, Curley’s Wife, doesn’t have a name and men control and *spoiler* ultimately murder her. We sympathise with the men. Gisèle’s rapists didn’t see her as a person. The curriculum is perpetuating this misogyny. It’s time to end sexism in schools.

“English literature remained disproportionately focused on works by white male authors, making it harder for teachers to keep students engaged.” The invisibility of women and girls in the in the curriculum is also upholding damaging sexism in schools.
