After conducting extensive earthworks on top of the archeological mound Tell Ali Muntar, it appears in more recent

SkySat imagery from October 7 that the IDF has since paved the top of the mound. The visible black area is similar to what we've seen when pavement has been used elsewhere.

It appears the IDF are conducting more earthworks on top of Tell Ali Muntar, potentially further damaging a Bronze Age-era archeological hill in what little remains of Gaza City's Shejaiya neighborhood. Michael Press shared some of the history of the site here:

SkySat imagery from May 13 gives us an updated look at the archeological site highlighted below. In the newer imagery, we can see Tell Ali Muntar has been further damaged and turned into a military position, with new roads, gravel, and military infrastructure set up on the hill.

A survey of Tell Ali Muntar in 2000 revealed the site had evidence of Late Roman/Byzantine and Ottoman date and may have been occupied as early as ancient Gaza.

shows Tell Ali Muntar, an archeological site already damaged last year, has been further damaged/turned into an IDF staging area with berms. A nearby cemetery has also been damaged. This is part of the IDF's expansion of the buffer zone into Shejaiya.

In the 13 days since its Gaza operations resumed, the IDF has now ordered Gazans to evacuate 55 percent of the strip's total area—now including all of (what’s left of) the city of Rafah as ground forces push back in there.

The playing card shape is even clearer in deserts. This example in southern Jordan was found during remote sensing survey and suggests an undocumented Roman military campaign into what is today Saudi Arabia, linked to the AD 106 Roman annexation of the Nabataean kingdom. 🆓
