Richard Owen's really quite pleasant History of British Fossil Mammals and Birds (1846). Judging by the excellent condition of this copy, students at Mason Science College Birmingham, est. 1880, had little use for a work of palaeontology then so long out of date.

5 February 1831: Prussian geologist Leopold von Buch gives a lecture in Berlin with a lithograph of Duria antiquior, describing recent fossil discoveries and the contribution of #MaryAnning, 'a knowledgeable lady who of late has become quite renowned on the continent for her discoveries in England'.

#FossilFriday The story of #MaryAnning and her famous fossil finds features in many children's books (over 100 in the last 30 years), and did so during her life as well, such as in Maria Hack's popular book 'Geological Sketches and Glimpses of the Ancient Earth', first published in 1832.
