March’s County Geological Site for Geological Survey Ireland, DECC is the Temple Bar Street Well, Dublin. This hydrological feature is thought to date from between 1680 to 1720 and was significant to the development of Dublin as it supplied freshwater to local residents.

The 68th Irish Geological Research Meeting, sponsored by Geological Survey Ireland, DECC, was held in TCD over the weekend. A number of Geological Survey Ireland staff presented on the research happening in the Survey, including the Tellus Programme, GEMINI, and the Research Programme.

February’s County Geological Site for Geological Survey Ireland, DECC is Clogher Head, Co Louth. This is where the two old continents of Laurentia and Avalonia meet at the Iapetus suture, the line along which the Iapetus Ocean closed in the Silurian, over 400 million years ago.

Prof. Chris Jackson gave the Geological Survey Ireland, lecture on 'Geoscience Solutions for the Climate Crisis' at the Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday, 21 Jan. This was followed by a panel discussion with Irish-based scientists to give an Irish perspective. More info: www.gsi.ie

January’s county geological site is Dunmore Cave, Co Kilkenny. ⚫️🟡 The cave formed when glacial meltwater (last 2.6 million years) chemically dissolved the permeable Carboniferous limestone (359 – 323 million years old) and resulted in impressive stalactites and stalactites.

Geological Survey Ireland, Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications were at the BT Young Scientist Science & Technology Exhibition again this year, held recently at the RDS in Dublin. We were joined by our colleagues from the INSN & QuakeShake projects in DIAS.

We are back for the final day of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the RDS. We have had a brilliant time so far discussing all things geoscience related. Come visit our stand today in Hall 1.
