Very sad news. The eminent French medievalist, Martin Aurell died last night unexpectedly. His students and colleagues at Poitiers are in shock, unsurprisingly. Martin's contributions to Anglo-French history were enormous, and his generosity with advice and sources unbounding.

Not many people know this, but on the day the Black Death arrived everyone was sent a text message stating that feudalism had ended. This resulted in many people asking what feudalism was. They were told not to worry about it because it was over. This is why we know little about feudalism today.

Or was it a shrine base for St John of Howden? But he’s known to have lain in the centre of the choir. The 16thC parish records finally gave a clue. A medieval liturgical clock survived into the 17thC in the church. And this was likely its base. Right place too.

A puzzle at Howden Minster This limestone structure up against the SE pier of the crossing long puzzled ecclesiologists. The heraldic decor is 14thC, so the period at least is clear. An altar? But it faces diagonally into the transept and has no incised crosses.
