This week, in my newsletter The Queer Friendly Nonprofit, I look at social media bans in Australia & proposed bans in the UK & USA. I also look at what the literature says about LGBTQIA+ experiences with social media.

Longer thread later but in my biweekly newsletter this week I talk about what is in the KIDS act and what the academic literature says about social media's impact on LGBTQIA+ youth (spoiler alert: It is complicated but provides community) Read for free here:

So the only thing I am going to say about the NYTimes article (not linking to it) regarding queer/gay is that this divide has been around for a long time and is stupid AF. I always describe it to students as the heteronormative homosexual v. the radical queer & the movement has gone back & forth.

This week we are hearing about a Jewish person who works hard to support LGBTQ+ rights kicked out of a pride event for being Jewish, a lot of non-Jews explaining antisemitism to Jews, & now a guy with a nazi tattoo is being supported by a major trans rights PAC. ...

This is the problem with when people talk about zionism/antizionism. There are so many definitions. While some people may see this as a problem, I think the problem is people trying to create one definition. Zionism is a Jewish movement & Jewish philosophy is messy & debatable.

Today's activity with my six year old during his week between school & camp is making chocolate dinosaur cookies with buttercream. He piped with a piping bag for the first time & enjoyed it. He was concentrating and took it very seriously.

There are a lot of issues with that TL did but want to talk about "privilege". It has become this insult that gets thrown or a competition. Having a discussion on privilege is important, but it needs to be taken seriously. I talk about privilege when I discuss working in other countries

It's Father's day, my day off. So what did I do? Bake of course. I usually don't like Funfetti bc it sometimes has a chemically after taste no matter the sprinkles I use. This came out really yummy & was easy af.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute womenβs work to hallucinated male scholars.

News is coming in that the FTC is suing World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) claiming that WPATH overstates the benefits of gender affirming care for youth. A previous subpoena was blocked bc it was believed to be retaliation.

I find this a lot in the US. People see a disconnect between how one votes and how it harms others, putting it on LGBTQIA+ folx to "get to know them better" instead of MAGA to "not vote to hurt LGBTQIA+ people". Even when I was bullied for being gay, I was told "They are actually really nice".

So where do I send my students to find basic information about other countries? Is it Wikipedia? I think it might be Wikipedia. Wow, we have gone a long way from "Wikipedia is not a reliable source). I am open to suggestions for where students can find information on different countries.

Important new federal rule is being proposed that could impact a lot of nonprofit organizations that receive federal funds. I wrote an article on my substack showing why the idea of binarys in gender & "biological sex" doesn't hold up scientifically:

Today is my legal anniversary. When we got married all those years ago, NY would recognize out of state marriages but you couldn't perform them. So we got married legally in CT & then religious ceremony one week later. Just a reminder of how far we have come in a short period of time.

From a logistical standpoint, this would be insane. Airports are complex organizations and you cannot just move thousands of flights from one state to another. Between customs, air traffic control & flight patterns this would be a massive undertaking under a competent govt which this one is not.
