Yeah, there’s this idea that tech can ‘get it right’ and that’s true to an extent. But the beauty of sports is in individual moments where half the people are jubilant, half are heart-broken, and then we all argue about it for 10-20 yrs. And no tech has really changed that.

That’s a thing I broadly agree in regards to all instant replay/tech in sports. Like if your instant replay doesn’t allow for, say, 80% of neutral viewers to have a consensus with a call, then I’m not sure the tech provides a greater sporting experience than just living with the call on the field.

Soccer is fascinating in that it’s such a low scoring game and the referees’ individual 50/50 decision has such a massive impact on an expected goal. Marginal calls impact every sport but there’s not many routine calls in hockey that give a team an 80% chance of scoring 1 of 2-3 goals in a game.
