Anyway if anyone’s interested my modest (and very minimal) hifi setup is an Arcam Alpha 8, a Marantz KI and some Kef Coda floorstanders. It does sound nice though. I won’t dip back into vinyl yet because I’ve got enough expensive hobbies.

I don’t hate streaming really in all honesty. I did try out Qobuz on a dedicated setup and I did enjoy that. I do miss the ritual of a CD, record or tape though. It sometimes feel like people forget how satisfying that aspect is.

The worst burn was from my ex’s kid though. “No of course I don’t know what CD’s are. I wasn’t around in the 90’s.” Got me pretty good tbh.

Maybe I could even do live visuals on something that old, especially if I acquired an array of old webcams and piped the output into something like Hydra (ideally set up to run locally) Certainly food for thought and a real counterpoint to the standard (resolume etc) school of live VJing.

Particularly in years that have passed and everything when you get through all the glue and solder, the board is about the only thing that can be replaced, let alone upgraded. It does leave me somewhat feeling somewhat nostalgic.

At 100 or less it’s probably worth it but always worth seeing if there’s much else that’s out there if only for future proofing, but I’m not using much besides Renoise at the moment and really my requirements are pretty minimal. It’s a lovely thing to be able to give older equipment new life.

Since researching the earlier era of Thinkpads I find there x230/x250 12.5” format really charming despite the shortcomings of the aging battery and very dated display. Always looking for recommendations for something more modern, ideally that’ll work well with Linux. Great looking machines.

There’s a lot of safety and security in music I think and it can feel like a shame to hand that over to some corporate entity (and the many deities of wireless communications) after spending time curating your own collection.

Return to iOS is fairing equally well, I appreciate FaceTime and iMessage for the two people I actually use it with, but I’m finding myself still missing the 3.5mm headphone jack and an SD card slot.

I really want one of those 12.5” Thinkpads with a maxed out SSD so I can just store gigabytes of samples on it for Renoise. Preferable if it doesn’t run W*11 tbh. My visuals laptop serves me well and does a great job heating my flat in winter but sometimes you just want something a bit more nimble.

Got a beat up pair of akg k52’s and I’m slowly coming to the realisation that decent noise cancelling headphones might be a better shout than the comparatively more expensive ones I was planning on mixing on, because I definitely travel more than mix. What sounds good that doesn’t break the bank?

Binary Synth is heaps of fun. Especially for minimal stuff, I just used a tiny .ds_store file (you see them all the time if you go back and forth between Mac and Windows, tiny files anyway) and it gave me this. If anyone’s got any fun ideas for using this with Renoise let me know!
