Claiming Dignity in the Borderlands | Anastasio Hernández Rojas' Story In a historic decision, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) found that the United States violated Anastasio Hernández Rojas’ human rights when U.S. border agents brutally tortured and killed Anastasio in May 2010. This is the first known extrajudicial killing case decided by the IACHR involving U.S. law enforcement. As part of the decision, the IACHR has directed the U.S. government to reopen the investigation of Anastasio’s killing and change the use of force laws in the United States. Since Anastasio’s death, hundreds of men, women, and children have been killed by federal law enforcement in the borderlands, and no agent has ever been held responsible.
