The best advice I can give writers at any stage of the process is to find your community, whether it be online, in person, or a combination. Find the people who will buoy you when you feel like you’re drowning and who’ll cheer you on in your successes—and then do the same for them.

I've seen some pushback against is idea, but I strongly agree: To be a great writer of novels, one must read (and study) well-crafted novels. Other forms of storytelling also teach us valuable lessons, but the lion's share of insights are going to come from the same medium you're trying to work in.

I can't stress this enough. Being a great writer requires you being an enthusiastic reader. Read in your genre and out of it. (Yeah, even those kinds of books you swear aren't for you occassionally. You might be surprised.) Devour as much as you can.

Happy World Read Aloud Day! #WRAD isn't just for schools -- people of all ages can enjoy picture books, and reading ANY kind of writing aloud is a vastly different experience than reading silently. Don't be afraid to try out some character voices, too!

Readers: keep buying, sharing, and talking about books, esp by marginalized authors. Put in purchase requests at your library. Buy from your local bookstore. Preorders are ideal. Don't wait for the series to finish before buying. Read widely and more often. Read trad pub, small press, and self-pub.

Super proud to see Steve Breen's SKY & TY 2: DINOMITE! on this list! we had so much fun working on this hilarious graphic novel chapter book about bet friends, family (sort of), not getting too big for your boots, and learning to soar.

What's getting your creative juices flowing today? (Fury is a perfectly good answer.) What's getting in the way? How can you nudge the blocks to give yourself 5% more space? Is there something small you can work in to gain new perspective or joy?

Awards and shinies are wonderful (congrats to the ALA honors and winners today), but far more important is how a book connects with a reader, challenges them, encourages them, makes them curious, makes them dream, gives them comfort or insight or ambition. Write for the reader, not the accolade.

This is a giggle, but it points to why investing in our education system is so crucial and why the defunding and destruction of it needs to be reversed. A reminder on this day of the American Library Association Youth Media Awards that literacy really does matter. (Pssst, go pick up a book.)

Concentration right now? What is that? So whatever you are accomplishing, be proud. Each step gets you closer. Even the stumbles back--because you learn from that, and that jettisons you forward eventually.

Most libraries will have a simple form on their websites you can use to request a book. Or you can just ask a librarian. My library has purchased about 20 of my recommendations this past year!

Another secret! Book reviews don't have to be extensive and thoughtful and deep. You can give a book 5 stars and say nothing, or you can say, "Really enjoyed it!" or "Lovely worldbuilding!" or "One of my favorite authors!" No one expects a thesis. Every review helps.
