Let me just say as a school librarian… Right now the only task at hand is getting kids to read ANYTHING versus mindlessly scrolling. That battle is won or lost in grade school and no one book, genre, or style wins. What works for one kid, won’t work for another. We need every kind of book.

Yes. We can all be ambassadors. We can share books we love. We can reach out of our circles and cliques to give an up top to an author or illustrator who did a cool book. We can connect with other creators. We have voices too and we can use them.

It might shock that person to learn that some literary agents have hobbies or pets or even CHILDREN. They go grocery shopping and run errands and DO THINGS that aren't WORK. That is all allowed! We are just people! In related news: Your 1st grade teacher didn't actually live at the school!

Somebody on fbook said, in reply to this, "is it sad that a popular lit agent has time to make butter"? Actually, no, it would be sad if a lit agent DIDN'T have ten minutes of free time to make food in a day. This is not a commentary on the state of the publishing industry. It's just BUTTER, bro

Caveat, too! Caveat: I cannot tell you how many times I've sent edits or done a critique pointing at a problem and the writer's said to me, "Oh, yeah. I know. I was hoping you wouldn't spot that." If you know it's there, you should be trying to fix it. If you ignore it, it's not going away.

Used the word "complement" in this letter, and immediately thought of @elawreads.bsky.social, and how she called me out on a misuse when I was a wee editorial assistant. (And rightly so!)

Tapping away on an editorial letter, and boy, am I feeling the existential weight of "I've already written so much. How do I have so much more to go?"

I think there can be a benefit in keeping a junk file when you're revising. Rather than just deleting a section, copy it into the file. Maybe it becomes the perfect passage for something else. #kidlitchat

@isabellakung.bsky.social's advice at Spring Fling this weekend agrees with something we discussed in the past - the inspirational effect of water. She highly recommended a hot shower to fix a manuscript problem. I think #kidlitchat came to the conclusion that being in or near any water was helpful.

SERIOUSLY. I read a picture book draft aloud to my 7yo and I was like "oh wait, let me edit that," in the middle. #kidlitchat
