I have a fascination for bytecode interpreters (I've pushed that technique quite far in some of my recent games) and it's so nice to see it used on such limited hardware as the NES!

I'm on the record saying I'm not a fan of A Link to the Past art style, but @goodly.bsky.social is definitely fixing it for me with those superb redrawn pieces. (It probably can't run on the original SNES hardware but still, that's the idea)

my biggest mistake working in RPG Maker stuff as a kid was acting too snobby for the default assets and spending way too much time trying to make mugs and graphics before realizing i couldnt design a dungeon worth shit. my biggest advice to any budding dev is to Make The Damn Game Part Of The Game

I just blocked an AI apologist. Look, I already have to argue against AI in my workplace, I'm not gonna debate you on my social media feed during my free time. It's not productive and it's certainly not joyful. I have better things to do, and I sure hope you do too.

Even if it's really a "no string attached, no ulterior motive" deal, it's still not a good look to associate your tool for artists with the artists-killing corporation. That's how you get forked, which would benefit no one!

It does work! As expected, textures are distorted and some triangles are not correctly sorted, but both issues can be mitigated using smaller triangles. Very interesting.

I think it would be dangerous and naieve to assume game developers are not using generative AI - of course some are. But it's very disingenuous to pretend we know where or how. The 2023 GDC survey counted the finance department using ChatGPT as an example of game studios using generative AI.

That's something I love in the games I play and I really want to do more of with my own games but struggle because my engineer brain doesn't like one-off exceptions... It's such a different mindset

Because JRPGs are travelogs (game progression is mapped over space) it's been a challenge for me to write a story where you fight authority. As a player, you want to be able to return freely to towns you've already visited, expecting peace and services, but it's hard to justify if you're on the run!

It's crazy: when I code in C# I have no qualms searching strings in hashmaps multiple times per frame, but when I write C it feels too inefficient, unthinkable even. Totally different mindset. (Turns out even *linear search* is fast enough!)

A little funny to see this message after playing the entire game on the Deck. Well, Valve may not have info on Steam Deck compatibility for Silent Paradise Anthology, but I do: it works perfectly!

Also how I feel about video game genres:

I will say though, while every segment of the games industry is suffering from the same background radiation (of credit crunch combined with declining sales) I think the problems facing indie and AAA are actually quite different.

This. My "plan" (/day dream) to go indie to escape AAA is a selfish one. I only hope to save myself. It doesn't scale to an entire industry. We *need* AAA, just a smaller, more reasonable version of it (like we used to have)
