I’m excited to share the first publication from my lab on the unexpected strategy that MCPyV, a cancer-causing virus, uses to enter cells. This was truly a team effort and I am so grateful for each of the brilliant women who contributed to this research project.

I work in grants. From my POV, the solution is not to compete for crumbs, but to put that effort into banding together across institutions to stand up for research. We need to yell at politicians and make sure Americans know what they’ll lose if university research ends.

and it was exactly what I needed. Being surrounded by my fellow MOSAIC scholars and coaches reminded me that they can terminate our funding but not the community that we’ve created and community is everything in times like this 💕

Many brilliant scientists are now being punished by having our funding terminated because we are from underrepresented groups. We did everything right and we EARNED these awards. Remember us when you’re making decisions on whether DEI should be sacrificed to “protect” research funding.

Our lab is excited to hire a postdoctoral researcher to study the mechanisms that viruses use to ‘hijack’ TAM receptors in viral spread. We are looking for someone who is excited to learn new techniques and work in a highly collaborative team! Please share!

The measles stuff isn’t a medical mystery. You don’t need to interview experts who unpack the complexities of measles transmission. You do need to hammer politicians who have undermined successful vaccination programs and put children at risk.

ASM did a spotlight article on me last February and it has also been taken down as “under review”. Other spotlight articles are still up so not sure how else to interpret this besides the obvious. It feels pretty crappy to have been singled out and I won’t be engaging with them in the future.

And the plan cannot be: "Lay low and carry on" "Remove DEIA themes from your research" "Edit your biosketch to make more DEIA agnostic" Telling people to not pursue research they are passionate about or to erase parts of their identities and be more docile will be just as or even more harmful.

Academic institutions in the US need to seriously consider how they will support and protect their minority faculty during this time. The conditions we face are already hostile for most - targeted attacks and added barriers to advancement will push many to simply walk away.

This is where collective action is needed if we all include diversity and its relevance to are research in grants& biosketches will they defend all of us? Complying in advance is harmful. Some people can delete diversity from biosketches and grants I can't delete that I'm a black woman scientist.
