Started a shorter and (hopefully) less demanding writing project last night, more in the along the lines of an anthology series similar to Sherlock Holmes. Trying to determine whether this first one will be short story or novella is proving difficult at this early stage.

Draft 1 of the book is officially complete.

We are at over a 100,000 words.

And so the final chapter of draft one begins.

Ready to be done with this draft so I can work on something else for a little bit. I'm proud of what I've accomplished so far, but it's messy, and needs some time to rest so I can look at it with fresh eyes. I also just want a break, much as I love writing for these characters. 😅

Just killed a major character for the first time and I think I succeeded at making his death unexpected. Not sure what direction I want to take the fall out, though. Might be too early on in the protagonist's character development to hit the note I really want to go for. Eh. Fuck it we ball.

I think The Amazing Digital Circus is very good and I was pleasantly surprised by the Vic Blood joke that was thrown into one of the episodes. Gooseworx knows their Ellison and it pleases me. That is all I will ever publicly say on the matter.

I've hit my second real slump in writing this book. Still forcing myself to sit down and type, got some stuff done yesterday, excited for what's next, but not much progress over the last week and some change.

Hit more than double my daily word goal tonight.

We are officially over 200 pages into the first draft and I'm about to write a cryptic dream sequence. Mysterious prophecies and upsetting imagery that will have a devastating dramatic payoff later. I'm stoked to write it.

70s sci-fi flicks are turning out to be just such an interesting flavor of strange the more I watch. Your pretentious A24-loving friend would probably love this one. Watch it with 'em if they haven't seen it.

Finding different music genres help me get into the flow of different scenes. Emotional or introspective scenes? Math rock/midwest emo. Fight scenes and spooky scenes? Heavy metal/fast-paced darkwave. Travel scenes? Folk and indie.

Four pages written today. Happy.

Been wracking my brains for the past few days on how to approach this travel section of the story. Think I've figured it out. Time to get back to it tomorrow.

Today's lesson in writing fantasy: You need to make a map. Doesn't have to be pretty, and you can make it up along the way, but if your character is going to be traveling all over the place, you're gonna need to start mapping.

Words: 349 Today was just kind of a shitty day all around. Didn't get a lot done writing or otherwise. Worked through some emotional stuff, so that's something, I guess. I did write SOMETHING, so that's better than nothing.

Words today: 804 Had a busy weekend, didn't get the chance write yesterday. Played Here to Slay for the first time, though. That was cool. Should see if my uncle wants to do some war games anytime soon. Been a while.

My burst of creativity for today was recording lines with Taya from @spectralhorizons.bsky.social for an upcoming Doctor Who, so no writing update today.

Words today: 1,239 My mother asked to see my writings today. I showed her despite the fact she has a track record of not liking my writing. Immediate regret.

Novel update: Words today: 784 Total words: 63,948 Got told I looked like a Harlan Ellison wannabe today, and you know what? That made my day.

Novel Update: Words today: 1,324 Total words: 63,164 Too much pizza. Not enough sleep. That is all.

I am physically struggling to resist going back and fixing some of the stuff in Part I of the novel before I've finished with Part II. So I just outlined some of the fixes I already want to implement in the hopes that that that'll satiate my nerves for a while.

Novel updates: Words today: 1,055 Total words: 61,840 Finished up the first half of the scene I was working on yesterday. I think I'll probably have to cut it down when I eventually go back for the first round of edits. Also started The Song of Achilles today. Very easy and engaging prose.

stop using AI to do your research. it hallucinates too often. if you want an answer to something, post something arrogant on the appropriate subreddit. something like: "this item performs 10% better than everything else. only idiots deny this." this will bait nerds into doing your research for you.
