This might not be the best version. The Dover Thrift Edition. And I thought I had a hard copy of Tolkien's "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" lecture but I can't find it... also, I think it's implicit in more than one place in the story that Grendel is big and has superhuman strength, right?

The first in a series. I didn't realize this until I was halfway through the book. Also, they made a tv show out of this that I tried to watch once but couldn't because of the stupid clothes and hair on the Danes. Might try again.

Great explanation of the burnt cakes/bread story. Also, the ultimate comeback, I'm-putting-together-a-team, redemption revenge tale.
