The President’s FY27 Budget guts programs that protect the environment, promote health, and reduce energy bills. Some of the most egregious cuts include eliminating LIHEAP, halving the EPA’s budget, and reprogramming billions of funds for renewable energy. More below:

Recently, Congress passed an approps package that funds all the govt, minus DHS. Overall FY26 funding is higher than the Trump admin proposed, but there were still significant cuts for climate and environmental programs. Here’s what we’re tracking:

Congressional Republicans gave Trump a slush fund for ICE and CBP in the "Big Beautiful Bill." Tens of billions of dollars that is still usable even during a shutdown. Democrats must make rescinding that money the price of any future govt funding, as Republicans did with IRS money from the IRA.

In the wake of another horrific shooting death in MN by federal immigration officers -on top of wrongful detentions, violence, & fear there & across the country- it is appropriate for the Senate to use the budget process to push for critical protections for people & communities.

The EPA indicated that it would no longer take into account the health benefits of reduced air pollution in its cost-benefit analyses for clean air regulations. @mtajo.bsky.social explains why this further undermines health and safety: www.cbpp.org/research/fed...

If the shutdown doesn’t end before nov 1, LIHEAP will be in trouble. States should increase shutoff protections.

The Admin continues to pause + cancel climate & energy funding, mostly in Dem-held districts. Early in the shutdown, they cut ~$8b in DOE grants, incl. for improving grids, reducing emissions & supporting heat pump manufacturing. More cuts may be coming: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Senate Environment + Public Works Committee Republicans released their portion of the budget + tax proposal that is expected to raise energy bills and worsen pollution. The bill mostly mirrors the House bill + repeals many federal programs created by the IRA.

The House bill includes $546B in cuts to tax credits & other programs designed to promote clean energy. Cuts would raise energy costs, undermine economic opportunity in struggling communities & hasten climate change. More in my + @rachelijacobson.bsky.social's newest paper:

Today, advocates braved the rain to send PJM a message: DO YOUR JOB. PJM must stop prioritizing fossil fuels & add newer, more reliable sources of energy to our grid. Renewable energy is the BEST way to drive down costs for ratepayers & to create a better energy system for all.

The House W&M bill severely curtails tax credits for clean electricity and eliminates incentives for clean vehicles. These changes will lead to higher utility bills for households, job losses in areas facing underinvestment, & worse health outcomes in vulnerable communities.

In all the reconciliation chaos, it's easy to miss other threats to climate funding. The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund - on track to leverage billions of federal + private $ for clean energy projects in low-income communities - remains under threat. More details in: www.cbpp.org/blog/continu...
