Top first watches in April. The last three of these won me over with one core performance. Reinsve, DirisĂą, and Booth. They felt like characters who I'd never seen before on screen. Beale Street is great in the ensemble.

When I first saw Blothe Spirit, I was distracted by Margaret Rutherford. I was sure I knew her face, but I hadn't seen anything she was in. Turns out, it was a resemblance.

Ten years ago today, in April 2016, the Boston Globe printed a satirical front page imagining a future Trump administration. The page was called "alarmist," "hyperbolic," "dystopian." But we’ve put up with so much since then it now looks like . . . a slow Thursday?

The matter-of-fact way she asks what investors should do if Trump destroys Iran. Absolutely wild. "Let's talk about tonight, this deadline that President Trump has set 8 p.m., has threatened to destroy a civilization. How does an investor process that? Is it a bigger upside risk or downside risk?"

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

I had a coworker who would often start sentences with "But..." or worse, "Yes, but...," and the sentences were on unrelated topics. A change of subject. She was Czech, but I don't know if the Czech language played a part.

In the 1920s, there was an enormous Klan-aligned caucus in the House of Representatives that passed an immigration restriction bill designed to keep out Catholics and Jews because they supposedly posed an existential threat to American civilization. 100 years later, here we are.

"It’s impossible to hear the secretary spout these rhymes and not picture how he must have practiced them in front of the mirror in his rumored makeup studio at the Pentagon, imagining himself the hero of an action movie."

It's weird that
@letterboxd.social
doesn't have a musical genre. It has a music genre, but that includes a lot of concert films. Also, why isn't West Side Story classified as "music."

i work with words for a living, so I am biased, but I really think we've got to bring back words. really useful if you imbue them with meaning and arrange them properly!

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

HBO Max on the iPad has a section called Popular Movies. It is just movies I've seen or started. I can only assume I am in a cohort of one in their algorithm. Some of the ones on the list that hardly seem "popular:" Deception (1946) Battleship Potempkin (1925) The Tale (2018) Working Girls (1987)

Thread of stories run by Bari Weiss's group blog that did not ask the targets of (frequently uncorroborated) accusations for comment, let alone give them a preemptive veto over the story:
