🧵 Jess Hilarious is what you get when you have internalized misogyny so deeply, that it is ingrained in who you believe yourself to be as a cis woman existing in a patriarchal society. The patriarchy tells cis women that our identity is hinged upon our uteruses and our ability to produce children.

Institutional racism (re: anti-Black bias) is the root cause and continues to be the reason for the decline in intellectualism in our society. Book banning and inadequate educational programs limit the exposure to diverse perspectives and stifles critical thinking.

They also fostered our emotions and taught us how to empathize with others. America doesn’t want us (or anyone else) to know about the world outside of the one manufactured to impoverish and ultimately destabilize its citizens.

We do not talk enough about the many educational programs that are no longer available to children (and adults) in today’s world. These programs were groundbreaking and ultimately, shifted the ways we imagined the world within and around us. They showed us the world outside of the ones we knew.

My friend @rrandolphjr (on that other app) once said: “word-work is sacred work. my people believe in speaking things into existence, believe in the power of the tongue. this is a Black rhetoric, ethic, aesthetic.”

You know how our Mama nem would say, “You smell like outside” when you was out there runnin’ around all day? That’s how the funk of this anti-Black world clings to you. So, be sho’ you washing yo ass every time you ready to take yo ass bike up in dat hize.

Look at how quickly that reverence for Black women goes out the window when we don’t show up in the veneer of respectable. The second we step outside the mold, that so-called reverence flips to disdain. Suddenly, we’re too much, too loud, too defiant, too provocative, too unkempt, too imperfect.

I learned foot washing right there in a Black church. Our folks folded rituals right into the tapestry of our religious practices.
