By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

One of the roles of NOAA is to monitor major storms around the world. Their work on hurricane/cyclone/typhoon early warning is a lifesaving global good. Another way the DOGE wreckage will cost lives around the world.

At least 15 Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico have reported being stopped at their homes and workplaces, questioned or detained by federal law enforcement and asked to produce proof of citizenship during immigration raids since Wednesday, according to Navajo Nation officials.

I just learned NCAR/UCAR’s Rising Voices Center for Indigenous and Earth Sciences has been eliminated. For over a decade, Rising Voices fostered collaborations between Indigenous and Earth (atmospheric, social, biological, ecological) sciences to advance community resilience. This is a huge loss.
