It's not just DnD players that insist on hacking games they haven't played I constantly have to beg lancer pilled mechaboos in the Salvage Union discord to just run a single session RAW before adding an entire hex grid combat system, stat arrays to every mech and pilot, and a custom cover system.

Pro GM tip When a player says something like 'Can I do X or Y', instead of wryly smiling and saying 'You can try' tell them the odds / die roll needed for the action, and any potential consequences or positive outcomes from it, and you'll have a much smoother play experience.

I have managed to resolve a single day on mr bones wild demesnes ride

no panny the game has started dont add vassal rules

So cataphract has made me realise that actually if a lord of a keep has a problem with a bunch of bandits in a nearby ruin it genuinely is tremendously easier to hire 5 local adventures for a few hundred coin to deal with them than ready and supply your entire army and hope it doesn't rout.

Theres like a dozen people in the Cataphract game now and it's already feeling like a second job and we haven't even started. I can't wait. Not been this excited to run a game since my early days of DnD. If there's anymore sickos out there hit me up.

Perhaps the worst designed mechanic I added to Cataphract was tracking a holds settlement score (abstracted wealth/levy/food) by counting hexes around it based on its type. Each hex has a different value. Then to compound things neighbouring holds compete for them creating nested zones.

Sam Sorensen wrote a beautiful, albeit complex, roleplaying wargame called Cataphract, and I took the rules and mashed them into a sheer monstrosity. Set loosely in Britain in the Dark Ages, you play as competing warlord households in real time. I'm looking for people bad enough to play.

I ran a playtest game of Salvage Union a while ago, presenting players the options of the Mountain or Desert from the starting map location, a rather annoying player said "can't we just go down the middle." (which I've artfully rendered with an arrow), and it's lived rent free in my head ever since.

Sometimes you get into a 3am hole of calculating relative % population growth of a settlement derived from its excess yearly supplies, determined by monthly crop yield adjusted by seasonal modifier, and wastage, for your dark age rpg heartbreaker, and you need a friend to pull you from the brink.

Pet TTRPG peeve of mine is when you say a game is complicated, and someone interjects and says 'No it isn't, in Rolemaster you just roll a d100, and if your skill is 65% you succeed on a roll of 65 or less.', as though the core resolution is the only element of a game that can make it complicated.

OSR GMs saying PBTA has too much improv with a straight face whilst generating a random wilderness encounter of 3d10 x 10 Bandits, with a 4th Level Fighting-Man for every 30 bandits,and a 8th or 9th level fighter for every 100 bandits, and a Magic User for every 200 Bandits....

I for some reason am reading through the AD&D 2e skirmish rules and my god you have to pre-declare your miniatures movement before you measure how far the distance is!

I've been reading through Torchbearer 2e in prep for a game I'm running of the Dread Crypt of Skogenby and whilst I love the vibe, holy hells it's dense with rules.Am I just being a big dumb dumb or has anyone else struggled with it, and does anyone have any advice for running it for the first time?
