Doug Wildey's vision for Jonny Quest helped create some fantastic adventure tales. Bandit wasn't his idea (and laid the groundwork for characters like Scooby Doo) I recently learned he worked at Ruby Spears during the time Jack Kirby was there, doing designs and storyboards.

Daily Hanna Barbera For Kentucky Derby day, we have a 1965 (and 45th) Loopy de Loop theatrical cartoon, Horse Shoo. Loopy is trying to be good (My Name is Loopy) and help a horse hide (horse hide, horsehide, that's a joke). Voices of Daws Butler as Loopy and Hal Smith as Bronco the horse.

Friday Night Fight: Cartoon Edition Yankee Dood It (1956 by Warner Bros) vs The Story of Creative Capital (1957 by John Sutherland)) The shorts are both based off the same fairy tale, the Elves and the Shoemaker. An elf teaches the lessons of capitalism.

Images from The Story of Creative Capital (1957) the cartoon has an elf explaining how much things have improved over time because of investments. Example: Once, you had to work 944 hours to buy a car, but by 1957, only 843 hours to buy a better car. P.S. In 2021, it was 1696 hours. Oopsy.

The Story of Creative Capital (1957) A cartoon that explains to you, the common American Caucasian, why you're important - as a worker, a consumer, and an investor. Yes, it ends telling us how capitalism is a golden shower of prosperity

Daily Hanna Barbera Jeffrey Scott was a long-time writer and story-editor for the Super Friends. He is the son of Norman Maurer (lots of HB work) and Joan Howard, and the grandson of Moe Howard - of the Three Stooges. He apprenticed under his father, and went on to do Super Friends

Doc Savage: Man of Bronze (1975) The golden car that Doc uses in NYC, standing on the running boards, seems to be a moified (adding those running boards) 1937 Cord supercharged 812 Phaeton convertible. The movie prop is believed to have been a real 1937 Cord, and not a replica.

Daily Hanna Barbera When HB was making Laff-a-Lympics (1977), the ownership of Dick Dastardley and Muttley were in question: thus we got counterparts The Dread Baron (John Stephenson - not Paul Winchell) becomes the scheming villainous member of the Really Rottens.

Comic Book History Siegel and Shuster had the first of a series of stories in New Comics 2 (1935), years before Superman, and even before Doctor Occult in New Fun 6 (1935) New Comics (National's 2nd title) became Adventure Comics. New Comics 2 also has an early holiday cover (but it is a joke)

Comic Book History Did you know DC's Adventure Comics began as New Comics back in 1935? The title was to clearly say the material was new. 84 pages for a dime. A 'picture story magazine' by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson Most stories have a single.crestor as writer and artist (eg, Sheldon Mayer)

Columbos Bert Freed originated the role in 1960 live tv 'Enough Rope' (which became Prescription Murder) Droopy, Master Detectice and Mumbly are drawn from Columbo. Peter Falk transformed the role, playing against slick or tough tropes. Who would you cast as a modern Columbo?

To my surprise, I am okay with Spock being played by many actors. Just a role. I do think of Nimoy as The Spock, the definite article as it were. Perhaps it is not logical, but the needs of the many Spocks outweigh the needs of the few Spocks, or the One Spock.

Daily Hanna Barbera In 1977, Lt Mumbly becomes villainous Captain Mumbly of the Really Rottens in Laff-a-Lympics Why not use Muttley? Because Muttley was not fully owned by Hanna-Barbera (Wacky Races has game show origins) While Muttley is a Starscream-esque folllwer, Mumbly is more of a leader

FYI: DC has a $10 'Compact' version of V for Vendetta. The series is a relatively new digest sized (8.5" by 5.5') designed to be 'readers' for on-the-go to compete with manga - but in color. The series are selling well - which shows like 'Showcase Presents' - people want to read, not collect.

Daily Hanna Barbera Mumbly (not Muttley) was first detected in 1976 on ABC as a Columbo-esque detective. Oddly Columbo aired on NBC. Columbo's alleged car was a 1959 Peugot 403 Cabriolet convertible, He had a dog named Fred. Mumbly ran 16 episodes - then became a villain on laff-a-lympics

Mego talk! If you were a kid in the 70s, you probably had Megos. I had a number over the years - and my mom would often let me pick one out for my birthday or something - but I couldn't open it until the event. So, we might be at dinner with me gazing at a Mego in a box. Aquaman really stands out

Aw man. Gerry Conway has passed. I got to speak with Gerry a handful of times, back when I was writing articles for Back Issue magazine. He was, hands down, my favorite person to interview. He was friendly, candid, and very funny. He had strong opinions about the current state of the comics biz. 1/

Daily Hanna Barbera One of the artifacts of early tv animation is the large amount of theatrical animation on tv. Critiques of HB animation need to keep apples to apples - and not the oranges of expensive theatricals

Daily Hanna Barbera It was actually UPA in the 1950s that pioneered limited animation - less as cost cutting and more as an artistic choice. This 'UPA style' would help early HB cartoons. The 1990s was see a resurgence of flat figures, bold colors, minimal backgrounds, etc (See Powerpuff Girls)
