Have spent some of the morning helping a Linux newbie through a few things. At some point the discussion had related learning about how to use Linux to entering a deep cave system like Moria. I did mention how at least there were doilies on the stalagmites now.

Follow up: BECAUSE LINUX if I set this machine up with ethernet connected, the touchpad works just fine. I have tried it on 3 distros just to make sure, all three where IT DID NOT WORK IF ethernet disconnected. What the... I just don't... [Insert other noises here]
