I finally found a good use for the overused (in academia, especially among phd students) word 'lacuna'. You got a papyrus from like 500 BCE, but there's a big-ass hole in it and you can't reasonably guess what was written there? Lacuna. 'Gap' doesn't really fit as well. I'm good with that use.
