So. What are best strategies for us as researchers? How do we divert this sewage, what infrastructural elements help drain it out of the system? What are best—and by that I mean efficient, least effortful—practices whenever we encounter this kind of crap? We need public education in info hygiene.

In applying AI to material science, biology, etc, capitalism is trying to shed science. The point is to substitute the engineering of a machine that can generate what science has hitherto done, but without having people know things. Knowledge ultimately residing in private property is the dream.

Wherein Newsletter Guy is aghast to discover, a few decades late, that libraries accommodate knwldg production + (social) learning in myriad forms! But if you give college kids ☕️, they’ll forget how to read!! Non-📚-centric things are pro-illiteracy! These are spaces of “necessity,” not FUN, dammit!

The panel at #Crossref2025 discusses some of the challenges of the Research Nexus in the real world - the technical challenges of the scale, keeping metadata open (particularly abstracts), use of metadata by AI, importance of metadata in languages other than English.

Panel at #Crossref2025 wonders if metadata has an image problem. Bianca Kramer says the word metadata not used in the Barcelona Declaration. Mariángela Napoli thinks perception of metadata is something too technical. Kazuhiro Hayashi describes metadata as "the unsung hero". Time for a rebrand ;)
