A beautiful autumn day in the Highlands today. We went walking on one of our old haunts; 9 miles along the River Conon on the Brahn estate. This is one of my favourite places and holds memories of our much missed Whippet, Ivor.

Sometimes the back of buildings are more interesting than the front. This is the rear view of buildings on Tain High Street taken from the old cemetery. The higgeldypiggeldy rear of the buildings reminds me a wee bit of Edinburgh

In the 1840s the Galson estate on Lewis was cleared for sheep. Most people were put onto emigration ships to Canada. Finally in 2007 - a community buyout. This commemorative sculpture by Will Maclean & Marian Leven is shortlisted for Marsh Award. If it moves you pls vote.

Tain is a small town in the Highlands and can hold its own when it comes to book festivals. Over the past week the annual Book & Arts Festival has been running and tonight we had Graeme Macrae Burnet, celebrated author of His Bloody Project. Iām looking forward to his new book already

Todayās excursion was Culloden and a walk through Culloden woods and Clava stones, an ancient burial site. Culloden is very touristy but that aside you can only imagine what went on here in 1746.

My gardening joy this Summer has come from Buddleja. We cut back an area overgrown with Gorse and Bracken and found two woody Buddlejaās. I cut them down to base and theyāve produced beautifully scented flower spikes and Iāve had Peacock, Comma and Red Admiral butterflies

Todayās activity was a 7 mile walk in Dunbeath, Caithness. This is historic clearances country and there are many remnants of buildings which once housed families before they were forcibly (and violently in many cases) cleared to make way for sheep

Old cemeteries and churches are atmospheric places to visit. This one had a 9th century stone and a Sycamore which is estimated to be around 200 years old

. The reverse side of the stone depicts a scene thought to symbolise a battle.
