It’s a literal layer at that! In AD 61 the native Britons revolted against the Roman occupation of Britain and burnt Colchester to the ground. Evidence has been found across the site of the colonia and earlier fortress, and also at settlements around Balkerne Lane and at Sheepen.

For generations, fisherman have been pulling Roman pottery out of the sea off the coast of Kent near Herne Bay. The site has become known as Pudding Pan Rock, as locals used the ancient dishes to cook puddings in. It is thought that they originate from an ancient shipwreck #FindsFriday.

The Trier Gold Hoard is the largest #Roman gold hoard ever discovered. It comprises more than 2650 aurei (gold coins) with a total weight of about 18.5 kilogram.
