The Roman road between Lowborrowbridge fort and the fort of Bravoniacum at Kirkby Thore in the Eden Valley passes over Coalpit Hill with its solitary tree before dropping down to Blea Beck. The Howgill range of hills form a magnificent backdrop on this lonely stretch of the ancient route.

The walls show constant rebuilding since their construction in AD214 but 8 other forts lie beneath since the founding of the site in cAD85.

Two inscriptions in Chesters Fort museum recovered from the central section of Hadrian’s Wall mention construction work rebuilding the wall by the Durotrages tribe based around Dorset on the south coast of England. The traditional date of these inscriptions is the late 4th century.
