You’re too close to your product / website / writing to see the “obvious” flaws. At minimum, watch customers attempt to understand and use it. At maximum, hire editors whom you trust.

This is what happens when you sacrifice clarity and just hop on the "We're like X but for <<insert category>>. When it comes to your copy, remember clarity over cleverness. Bonus points: If you can tell me what this app even does?

Just going to say as an introvert, Waymo is a dream. Get to my destination without any small talk. It is also a pretty cool experience.

Editing by committee? A recipe for mediocre marketing. When 4+ people weigh in, the messaging gets lost. Keep it tight. Keep it clear.

All of this. My go-to copywriting default is clarity beats cleverness. And yes, I sometimes get some initial pushback but the results speak for themselves when I stick to this.

Only introspective people have impostor syndrome. Only over-confident ignorant people think would be confident without cause. So, if you’re experiencing it, realize that’s because you’re smart. Which makes you more worthy, not less.

Just your regular reminder: Great ideas spread. Perfect writing doesn’t. Your audience doesn’t care if your content is perfectly written. They care if it’s clear. If it’s interesting. If it makes them think. Unless your audience is high school English teachers, then good luck to you.

If you aren’t tracking referral traffic from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc, you might want to start doing that. Seeing a lot more traffic from LLMs across client sites anecdotally.
