What kind of decent landlord would want to pit renter against renter just to drive up the price anyway?

It is objectively insane that all the money the average renter earns until mid May every year goes straight into the pocket of their landlord.

Today is Cost of Rent Day. The point in the year when England’s renters have basically earned only for their landlord. In 2026, that’s until 11 May, over 4 months of wages or benefits gone on rent. High rents are driving people into poverty. Watch to find out more:

After we intervened, the government reduced planned fees from 'hundreds' down to £47 for renters to challenge unfair rent increases. When you have to pay to exercise a right, it becomes a privilege. We're glad the government listened, but more must be done to ensure renters can access their rights.
