Everyone I know that consider themselves ‘English’ to a greater or lesser extent have some associations to other countries. My grand parents on my mother’s side were Italian, my grandmother on my Father’s side was Irish, grandfather English Am I ‘ethnically’ English?

Britishness is much younger as more open as a political identity. English is almost a millennium old and therefore much better established & very deeply rooted. I've always found this drive to negate an ethnic English identity as curious when it so very obviously exists.

There is a core identity in all the countries & regions that I have lived which I feel should be respected. These are people who's language, culture, religion and genealogy are very local. This is the majority of humanity and has been throughout history.

There IS a core identity, but ‘ethnic’ isn’t it’s source (I can’t speak for other nations but it’s true here) England is replete with people who stem from other countries and, feel, speak, behave as ‘ethnic’ English would. Personally; Italy, Eire, England, yet English to the core, only way I can be
