I think the prequels are better than people remember, and I acknowledge that TFA is, let’s say, derivative. But TFA is also VERY well made and full of super likable characters played by exceedingly charming/compelling actors. For me it’s at the other end of the Star Wars list from the prequels.

I 100% support this take. Both of these movies are among the movies I’ve seen the most times, and I’ve seen both some number of times measured in dozens. (The Paper is a bit flawed. It tries to be a serious drama for a while toward the end, and fumbles the tone change. But I still love it.)

Personal theory is that Empire looks and feel so good and has such good forward momentum partly b/c the lighting visually follows the rhythm of one day: Hoth is brightly morning, mid movie is neutral, Cloud planet is happening at sundown, Luke v. Vader is at night. Simple stuff but effective!
