It’s good to be reminded that Native Americans were not considered people in the eyes of U.S. law until 1879. Ishata Theumba served as an interpreter in the Standing Bear vs Crook case which changed this. She was also a writer and lecturer who travelled the world to advocate for indigenous people.

I’m in Vermont for the Non-fiction Comics Fest and a class visit at UVM. And so I drew Clarina Irene Howard Nichols. I dropped the Howard in the illustration because she had a bad go on her first marriage. Her husband tried to steal her children. No need to keep that Howard. More in comments.
