They crucified Christ when he condemned the rich and called for the liberation of the stranger, of the outcast, of the poor. They murdered MLK Jr. when he started addressing poverty through socialism. They killed Fred Hampton when he envisioned a rainbow coalition of all working class people.

Anyone of us could have been Rene Nicole Good, or our two neighbors who were shot in Portland. I visit the doctor at that particular building. A stray bullet could have easily hit any of us that day. ICE isn’t making anyone safer; they’re a tool of our oppression.

Racism isn’t just slurs or insults. It’s systems and decisions that consistently deny marginalized communities access to power, opportunity, stability, and dignity — often while pretending to be “neutral.” That’s what we’re actually talking about. Naming it isn't divisive. Ignoring it is.

said is that he wants to have more meetings behind closed doors, just like he used to have. Ryan doesn’t understand that the previous version of city government is over. It’s a representative form of government now. You’re supposed to listen to your constituents.

There are many troubling threads in that article, but I felt the need to draw out that dynamic, bc we have a government that was designed to ensure that we have a body that represents historically marginalized voices and so the discussions you read about race at the dais exist in that context.

This is a thing I know white people do because I have done it myself. It's what we do, but it doesn't mean we're irredeemable. It means we fix it and move on and ask ourselves how we can use our whiteness to undermine the very systems of reproduction that maintain structural racism.

When my colleagues of color say, "Hey, I think this framing is racist and here's why" they do so because they know these chats exist everywhere and the work of tearing down our racist institutions is far from done. The worst thing you can do is walk away from that conversation feeling victimized.

The vile comments against my colleagues in these texts is unacceptable. They also reveal why it's so important to call out the ways structural racism reproduces itself, and why it's doubly important for white people not to personalize that when your colleagues of color find the need to do so.
