I'm adding some lyrics to a song I wrote ~25 years ago. I'll find a way to post the whole thing when it's done, but I'll at least share the opening line here: "Life is a gift that has so much to give, if you leave enough time to live." I'm reluctantly forced to admit that musicals run in my veins.

A city doesn't need to be perfect. Nothing is, and nothing can be. But that doesn't mean we can't have ideals to aspire to, and if setting unreasonable goals is what drives me, well… maybe that's not so bad. Utopia will never exist, but that doesn't mean we stop trying to build better things.

I'd been trying to sketch a map of Elseways' downtown core, but realized halfway through I'd gotten the scale badly inconsistent. Will try again later, but I do like the ideas it's been sparking. The City plays a bigger role in the citizens' lives than you might expect…

I'm really glad this resolved itself in the right way. We didn't have to get here, but the right outcome was achieved.

Elseways is the city in my head, and like any city, it's a mixture of old landmarks and new constructions. That means sometimes parts of it need to get torn down and replaced with something better. It's not static, and neither am I.

Liverwurst, for one. Also strong smelly cheeses like Limburger or Stilton. Fermented tofu (good on plain rice). Beverage-wise I like Moxie and Mountain Dew. Meanwhile, I never got over my sensitivity to coffee (the taste still makes me go bleurgh even on small doses).

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Elseways failing to be a perfect utopia. It can still have that as a guiding principle, but it's never going to be all things to all people, and it's not like it doesn't have its own problems. It's still recovering from some of those.

Re: the plurality thing, I'm not sure if my situation counts or not and I'm curious to hear from people who have more experience with it. What I have is a large set of characters who often just act on their own. I'm not any particular one of them, but I'm where they live.

Three of Elseways' more prominent residents (some might say headmates, but that's a whole side discussion). BJ Sutter, Vivid Green, and Glitch Bitkin, an unlikely team-up who've found themselves spending more time together as they realize they fill each other's needs.

I've liked roadrunners ever since I lived in Albuquerque. They're cartoony enough on their own even with out the Looney Tunes treatment; they run like little dinosaurs, have very expressive crests, and make cute cooing "voot" noises.

I sometimes find words or images coming to me when I slightly doze off. This time it was a computer called a "Wordbright Dexo", a word processing machine with C64-style brown styling set off by rainbows. So those exist now in Elseways, I guess? I think I'm half-remembering something I read about.

He looked like a fun target for pixel practice, too.

Playing with the text renderer in Ambersand, just to see if I could still use all the stuff I built XenoWorks to handle, and it works great (after I fixed a few tiny bugs). Feel free to sprinkle weird characters wherever you want.
