Whenever I see a university-based vaccine expert quoted in a news story and identified in an extremely roundabout way that avoids naming their school, my stomach sinks a bit, imagining the likely ‘guidance’ from those schools to faculty about not getting on the government’s bad side.

A lot of the history and shape of American public health is explained by civil society (professions, health care institutions, philanthropy, even payers) designing policy to circumvent governments they never trusted. Ideal? Not even close. But now, there might be something useful in that DNA.

As if it wasn’t clear long ago, it’s time to accept that the days of relying on the federal gov’t to lead vaccination work is over (for now, at least) and to focus on alternatives as if the longstanding HHS/CDC activities don’t exist. Because they don’t anymore! Time to be proactive, not reactive.

Oh this is just a ridiculous assertion from Tracy Beth Hoeg, even if she tried to hedge her causal suggestion in her comments.

I’ve been watching ACIP meetings since 2006 and have spent a lot of time with their meeting materials going back to 1964. If there’s ever been another outside speaker who’s had 90 uninterrupted minutes to opine—let alone a non-scientist/physician/public-health expert—it’d be news to me.

When I teach about vaccine safety and VAERS (its strengths and limitations), I open the VAERS website and show how we could submit a report right then in a matter of minutes.

We’re 50 minutes in to the Siri presentation on all the purported failings of the childhood vaccination schedule and we’re only at slide 34 of 76.

This might be the all-time example of the classic strategy of this crew to overwhelm an audience with so many claims, allegations, (mis)representations, etc that it’s almost impossible to know where to start, let alone how to respond to them all.

Standing by this forecast from back in March, even before the ACIP purge happened.

4-5 ACIP members seem fundamentally opposed to the committee’s central purpose throughout its history—to provide population-level recommendations for how vaccines _should_ be used—viewing even a rec. as an impediment to informed consent, etc. So we’ll be doing this over and over for other vaccines.

Oh my, Tracy Beth Hoeg rejects the idea that the risk of an infectious disease for an individual differs depending on national/regional/local epidemiological contexts, health system considerations, etc.

All this talk about the original approval and recommendations for the current HepB vaccines prompted me to dig out those 1986 ACIP meeting minutes, collecting dust in my files for years. Many of the names in the room back then are still active—Schaffner, Gellin, Orenstein, Markowitz, etc.

Since we’re getting airplane analogies at ACIP, imagine having a Sec. of Transportation, FAA Director, and NTSB who were convinced that air travel was fundamentally unsafe, no evidence would change their minds, and even minor incidents confirmed that view. Not remotely the most important ACIP observation, but I’m struck by how they’ve transformed the setup into something that looks like an official CDC broadcast rather than an actual advisory committee meeting. (Compare to the old pre-covid setup). Better for clips/soundbites/social media, I suppose?

I’ve not always agreed with Cody Meissner—in fact, something he wrote was the only time I’ve been irked enough to write a letter to the editor in a med journal—but he’s a godsend on this committee. The only person qualified to be there by a mile. I hope he perseveres for as long as he can bear it.
