Years ago, St. Louis voters updated the city charter to enshrine our right to protect our public parks. Last week, developers, lobbyists, our Mayor, and members of our Board of Aldermen used a clever legal workaround to eliminate that right.

Today we learned that the only thing standing between a developer’s bulldozer and your favorite city park is 10 votes at the Board of Alderman.

BREAKING: by a vote of 10-5, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen votes to ignore the city charter, circumvent the will of the voters, and sell a city park to some developers to turn it into a parking lot. Mayor Spencer is expected to sign the bill, and a lawsuit is expected to swiftly follow.

Tomorrow is today. We'll soon see how broken our Board of Aldermen is.

i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

Another thing to note here, and I believe Alderwoman Sharon Tyus pointed this out: if the city can avoid sending park sales to a vote if the park doesn't have an ordinance, what is to stop them from simply overturning ordinances if they want to sell a park?

The Board of Aldermen will vote tomorrow on whether to give themselves and Mayor Spencer broad authority to sell off almost half of the city’s parks.

As with everything in this city and this state, the answers to these questions will be decided by a judge.

Update on your city government’s attempts to sell of city parks and turn them into parking lots

Google's AI mode got me mostly correct, except it says that Show Me Last Week is a @stlmag.bsky.social podcast. I would be honored if this was true, but alas, it is not.

It should be noted that the group that wants to buy this park gave Spencer's mayoral campaign/PAC at least $12,600 (that I can find)

No matter how you feel about this specific park, our city government shouldn't sell off green spaces without the voters getting their say.

It really sucks when city leaders rely on lies and fake data to push the narrative that they are swooping in to save the day. If you have to lie to make your point, your point is invalid. @caraspencer.bsky.social and SLDC Chief Otis Williams need to apologize. This is unacceptable.
