the internet as it used to exist helped teach me how to think. i had to evaluate the things i read rather than trust the first search result to be correct. but if stuff was wrong, it was wrong for logical reasons (bias, incomplete info, etc.) as opposed to plausible-sounding but meaningless bullshit

(3/3) as this inaccurate slop continues to flood the zone with bullshit, actual reliable (and even semi-reliable) sources will continue to get crowded out online, making search results worse. it’s essentially a pollutant, and the more of it enters the stream, the harder it will become to filter out

(2/3) …and when they are unable to do so, they confidently manufacture information that is complete bullshit and present it as factual, often citing equally imaginary sources. this is not a bug—it is the technology working as designed to create a false appearance of reasoning.

(1/3) setting the practical questions about climate and power consumption aside, i think it’s creating an epistemic nightmare. having accurate knowledge requires consistent, reliable sources. LLMs are incapable of accurately and consistently sourcing accurate information from primary sources…
