A ceasefire. Then ending the occupation. A long peace. The lands and the people regenerate. The ceasefire now. The rest of this, in our lifetimes. In the lifetimes of the old people who were young 75 years ago. In the lifetimes of the young people who have grown up under relentless violence.

Indigenous people here have called for a week of silence. I hope my words here are respectful of that so I won’t say more. But please notice what has happened here

This was to have a permanent, Indigenous-selected body to advise parliament ONLY WHEN ASKED, and only on Indigenous issues. 80% of Indigenous peoples wanted this (again, modest) change. And it was voted down by (white) Australians.

Even with support from many in parliament, even with an exceedingly generous (in terms of beautiful popular education), exceedingly modest (in terms of proposed changes to the constitution) campaign, white Australians voted no.

For any so called “allies” to Indigenous people who want us to pursue existing legal routes to justice for incremental change, please have a hard look at what happened yesterday in Australia and The Voice referendum.

Today, October 14, my family and I stood at the base of Uluru in absolute awe. No matter what happens with the referendum today, the Uluru Statement from the Heart has made ripples of change for many generations into the future. It came from this place, the heart.
