A shovel nosed Spathacalymene trilobite from the Silurian Massie Fm. of Indiana. These trilobites are usually found upside down, so you can only see the outside edge in the field. There's lots of speculation on the purpose of the shovel. Maybe to stir up the ocean floor sediment. #FossilFriday

Interpretive sketch of a Proterozoic #fossil. This is a very badly preserved version, or taphomorph, of the fossil I posted the other day. This one was trapped in a microbial mat before burial to higher temperature and pressure than the other example. #Geology #Paleontology

This is a partial Gabriceraurus, but it's flipped upside down. The hypostome or mouthpiece is preserved in place, so this was likely a dead trilobite, not a molt. It is Ordovician aged from the Bobcaygeon Fm. of Ontario. #TrilobiteTuesday

This was one of the first trilobites I prepped. It was before I had a professional prep room, so I used dental picks. This is just a molted head, but the Schizochroal eye with individual lenses is stunning. This is an Eldredgeops from the Devonian Silica Shale of Ohio. #FossilFriday

These specimens show Didymograptus murchisoni, graptolites collected from Abereiddy Bay in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Graptolites are incredibly useful as index fossils, and Abereiddy is a fantastic locality, I recommend a visit if you're in the area. Post by Elijah L. I. Wait.

It's Trilobite Tuesday! Pictured is a 7-in- (17.8-cm-) long Isotelus found near Dixon, Illinois. In size and shape, this specimen bears a resemblance to trilobite fossils unearthed in upstate New York. However, its dolomite-encrusted preservation provides it with a strikingly different appearance.

It's Trilobite Tuesday! Look closely at this Lower Cambrian Elliptocephala. This specimen—with a chunk missing from its thorax—reveals evidence of a predatory attack. Signs of healing along edges of the bite indicate that this trilobite might have survived its brush with death.

🔎 In 2017 a research team led by Charlotte Kenchington published several new fossils discovered in the rocks of Charnwood Forest. 📄 The study included three new species of the 560 million year old fossil Primocandelabrum, which lived at the bottom of a deep ocean.

Happy Trilobite Tuesday! Pictured is an enrolled cheirurid from the Ordovician of Wisconsin which could exceed 6 in (15 cm) if outstretched! The distance between its genal (or cheek) spines spans over 3.1 in (8 cm) across. For reference, a dime has been placed between its pygidial spines.
