Actually @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social has a much better claim to represent Jewish New Yorkers than Jonathan Greenblatt. Several mayoral polls show that Mamdani enjoys majority-or at least plurality-support among New York Jews. The only Jews who voted for Greenblatt are the donors on the ADL board.

If politics is downstream from culture, the debate about unconditional US support for Israel is over.

Jonathan Greenblatt is unaware of many things that happen to be true: For instance, that Israel denies millions of Palestinians basic human rights. His unawareness says nothing about reality. It says a lot about him.

Of course Mamdani has visited Jewish communities. What angers Greenblatt is that Mamdani isn't courting HIM. By winning the young Jewish vote while condemning Israel, Mamdani is exposing how out of touch Greenblatt is with many of those he claims to represent. That's what makes Mamdani a threat.

This language is so common that we forget how Orwellian it is. Self-determination is determination of the self, not others. When you deny millions of people citizenship in the land of their birth because they're the wrong religion, that's not self-determination. It's apartheid.

@peterbeinart.bsky.social begins his new book with a plea for continuing fellowship — or at least its possibility — with a friend he’s lost to disagreement over the conflict in Gaza. An audacious and, I hope, auspicious beginning. May there be peace, healing, forgiveness, and restored brotherhood.
