My submission on the Social Security Amendment Bill, as a thread 1/4 I strongly oppose this Bill. There is ample overseas and domestic evidence that increasing sanctions not only does not work as far as getting people off welfare and into work goes, it also costs more than it saves.

‘Vice signalling’ could describe the current NZ government’s bludgeoning approach to policy: eg always use English names first, enable te Tiriti to be undermined & ignore the growing social unrest and polarisation, cut social science & humanities research, end pedestrian/cycle ways & smoking bans.

the end of Marsden funding to social sciences and humanities without alternatives is blunt and counter productive. Governments need to invest in understanding people and communities -it is crucial to social cohesion & imagining and creating new futures and new opportunities
